EAU CLAIRE — Jan Goff-LaFontaine, author of "Women in Shadow and Light: Journeys from Abuse to Healing," will give a presentation at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Her presentation, "Out of the Shadows — Women Speaking Out and Moving Forward," will help highlight April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Goff-LaFontaine's book evolved from her photographic exhibit "Out of the Shadows" and features the story, in words and photographs, of forty women who triumphed over abuse by focusing on strength and healing rather than violence and victimization.

The presentation by Goff-LaFontaine will be followed by a short concert by one of the women featured in "Women in Shadow and Light."

Goff-Lafontaine is a photographer and author whose work focuses on bringing awareness and healing through art. Her photos have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and are included in many private and public collections. "Out of the Shadows" is on a national tour through 2007. Goff-LaFontaine's previous book, "Reflections — Between the Lines" (2000), focused on Vietnam veterans. She is on the faculty of Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek, Wis., and also teaches privately and continues to do freelance photography from her home studio in Aptos, Calif.

On April 20, Goff-LaFontaine will receive the 2006 Friends of Victims Award from HELP of Door County, Inc., a nonprofit agency working with victims/survivors of sexual abuse. The "Out of the Shadows" project began in Door County, where Goff LaFontaine teaches.

The presentation is free and open to all.

The event is cosponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault, the Women's Gender and Equity Center, Women's Studies program, Bolton Refuge House, The Plaza Hotel and Suites, the UW Commission on the Status of Women, and MOSAIC.
