UW-Eau Claire to Offer Academic Minor In Spanish
for Health Professions

RELEASED: April 12, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Nursing students with an interest in Spanish can now earn a Spanish for Health Professions minor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

"Future nursing students can graduate with expertise in communicating in Spanish in the area of health care, a growing need in Wisconsin and in the United States," said Dr. Juan Carlos Chaves, assistant professor of Spanish in the department of foreign languages.

In addition to a general bilingual proficiency, today's health care professionals must master the technical vocabulary and jargon within a clinical setting, and must be able to function in a cross-cultural, English-Spanish bilingual environment, Chaves said.

"This program will provide students of nursing and Spanish, as well as students of other health care-related professions, with a solid foundation of Spanish by combining the general study of the language and culture with exercises and practice in health care-related subject areas," Chaves said, adding that special attention will be paid to the development of skills in translation and interpretation.

The program will be phased in over the course of the next three years.

For more information, contact Dr. Juan Carlos Chaves at (715) 836-4908 or chavesjc@uwec.edu.
