| National Players will perform two staples of theater repertoire, "Dracula," and "The Taming of the Shrew," at UW-Eau Claire |
EAU CLAIRE — National Players, America's longest running classical touring company, will perform two staples of theater repertoire April 26-27 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as part of their 57th annual tour. The Artists Series will present both fully staged productions at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
Currently the touring program of the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts in suburban Maryland, National Players has earned a distinctive place in American theater. Committed to the formation of young theatrical talent and audiences, National Players seeks to celebrate the experience of theatergoing by presenting the world's greatest dramatic literature.
Made up of young professional actors, the company travels throughout the country performing two plays in repertory — one Shakespearean play and one dramatic classic — each season. The Players reach students and families who might otherwise have a limited opportunity to see live, classical theater. Company members also conduct workshops with students in such theater-related areas as acting, stage combat, scene analysis and improvisation.
National Players productions adhere to strict traditions of touring theater: company members double and triple, not only in roles, but in technical assignments such as lighting, sound, costumes, set-up and strike.
Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.
Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center and also will be sold at the door. The Service Center is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.
Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
