UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble II to Perform Spring Concert April 20

RELEASED: April 11, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II will hold its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Jazz II, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will open the concert with "Body and Soul" by Bob Florence, featuring soloists senior Steven Hobert, Hartland, on piano, freshman Adam Koble, Waseca, Minn., on trombone, and junior Jelena Radovanovic, Eau Claire, on alto saxophone. Mark Buselli's "Jovian Comets" and "Four" by Miles Davis also will be featured in the first set of selections.

For the second half of the concert, Jazz Ensemble II will perform Geoffrey Keezer's "Southeast Alaska Suit," a seven-movement work inspired by Keezer's week-long boat excursion in Southeast Alaska. The movements represent various locations and aspects of the trip, including the first, "Aboard the Karlynn," named after the boat used in the trip, and "Na Kohola (The Whales)," the forth movement, inspired by a sighting of humpback whales. Jazz II's performance of this work will be its American Premiere.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID.
