EAU CLAIRE — Mary Beth Kelley-Lowe has been appointed as a grant writing specialist for the Eau Claire Area School District and the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Kelley-Lowe began the jointly funded position April 3. She will provide leadership for initiating, developing, securing and administering public and private external grants and be a resource to school district and university personnel seeking grants.

Partnerships between school districts and universities are required for most education grants, said Katherine Rhoades, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences.

"A grant development specialist who can coordinate our shared initiatives is invaluable," Rhoades said. "Seeking external funding for important educational initiatives is especially crucial within the current budget climate."

Laurie Hittman, executive director of instructional services for the Eau Claire school district, said the school district is pleased to continue the partnership with UW-Eau Claire.

"This is a 'win-win' opportunity for both organizations," Hittman said. "It provides a chance to enhance communication and build better linkages between staff and programs in the school district and the university at a time when resources are diminishing. The possibility of increased funding for innovative ideas and partnerships benefits both organizations."

Kelley-Lowe was an instructor in the department of teaching and learning at the University of North Dakota. Previously, she was principal investigator and program director for the Circle of Life Program at the Dakota Science Center. And she was involved with a $4.8 million U.S. Department of Education Technology Innovation Challenge Grant project.

She earned a Ph.D. from UND, and a master's from the University of Iowa and a bachelor's from the University of Colorado.

Kelley-Lowe's office is in the Human Sciences and Services building at UW-Eau Claire.
