UW-Eau Claire Graphic Designers Win Awards
in ACUI Competition

Student designed brochures that received awards in the Association of College Unions International competition.

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graphic designers received three awards in the 2006 association-wide promotion and marketing competition of the Association of College Unions International. Winning entries were exhibited and the awards presented at ACUI's 86th annual conference March 17-20 in Kansas City.

The awards recognize publications designed by UW-Eau Claire graduate Brigitte De Chantal and student graphic designer Kristine Norberg.

Brigitte De Chantal received a first-place award in the professional division for her booklet promoting the 2005-06 season of the Artists Series and The Forum. The design evolved from the opening program statement, "We bring the world to you." The far-flung geography of artists and speakers on these two eclectic series was used to create an international theme. Events were tied together in a series of circles, arcs and map graphics.

De Chantal received a third-place award in the student division for a booklet that communicates the often complex and daunting policies of the campus meal plan. Color and many images of fresh foods are intensively used throughout to convey quality and variety of meal options. Each of the six meal plans is color-coded to help distinguish them from each other. The booklet assists in answering questions about meal plan operation and selection during freshman orientation and throughout the year.

From Hayward, De Chantal received a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design from UW-Eau Claire in May 2005. She is presently a graphic designer for Bard Advertising in Minneapolis.

Kristine Norberg's brochure for the 2005 Summer Session Programs series received a second-place award in the student division. Promoting the campus' free summer series of outdoor music and films, the brochure was designed to evoke the relaxed mood one might feel while enjoying a summer day or evening. The cover-side uses a tranquil combination of cooler colors for a night-time atmosphere, while the at-a-glance schedule side is bubbly and uplifting and uses warmer colors to create a day-time atmosphere.

From Milaca, Minn., Norberg is a UW-Eau Claire senior majoring in graphic design.

De Chantal and Norberg designed the brochures while working in the University Centers and Programs information design services area, under the direction of Juelie Sires. University Centers and Programs is a Student Services unit of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a longtime member of the Association of College Unions International. ACUI has served the college union and student activities field since 1914, and its members represent nearly 1,000 campuses around the world. The annual Steal This Idea competition awards excellence in college union and student activities graphics and marketing materials.

Other institutions recognized in the promotion and marketing competition include Drexel University, the University of Iowa, Indiana University-Bloomington, California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, California State University-Sacramento, Louisiana State University, Northwestern University, The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, the University of North Texas, the University of Southern California, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Award winners will be featured in the July 2006 issue of ACUI's magazine, The Bulletin.
