UW-Eau Claire Geography Students Present at Annual Meeting of American Geographers

RELEASED: April 3, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Twenty-six University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students presented the results of their research at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers held March 7-11 in Chicago.

All individuals listed are members of the geography and anthropology department unless otherwise noted.

  • Senior Brandon Cramer, Green Bay, presented "Geographic Literacy and the Press: Print Media Portrayals of the Middle East" with assistant professor Paul Kaldjian.
  • Senior Serena Davis, St. Paul, Minn., presented "Latino Migration to St. Paul, Minnesota, 1980 to 2000" with assistant professor Timothy Bawden.
  • Seniors Mark Nelson, Eau Claire, and Ashley Wong, Princeton, Minn., presented "Dunes, Forests, and People during Late-Holocene, Evidence from Buried Podzolic Soils in the Crepeele Dune Field, Southwestern Manitoba" with professor of geology Karen Havholm and associate professor Garry Running.
  • Seniors Casey Farrell, St. Paul, Minn., Jacob Henderson, Oconomowoc, Sarah Knabel, Winona, Minn., Michael Molnar, Menomonie, Nelson, Derek Pirkl, Stoughton, and James Strong, Chippewa Falls, presented "Evidence of an Extreme Paleoflood in Honokoa Gulch, Hawaii" with associate professors Doug Faulkner and Harry Jol.
  • Seniors Theresa Lenon, Waupaca, Molnar, and Susan Johnson, Bloomer, presented "Ground Penetrating Radar Investigations of the Tahquamenon River Basin, Michigan: preliminary results" with Jol.
  • Seniors Craig Sternberg, Prairie du Sac, and Neil Trombly, Eau Claire, presented "Geomorphic Analysis of Historical Sedimentation in Half Moon Lake, Eau Claire, Wis." with Jol and Faulkner
  • Trombley also presented "French/German Antithetical Paradigms for Electric Power Generation despite Common Objective against Global Warming" with Faulkner
  • Fall 2006 graduates Jen Bode, Shoreview, Minn., and Nathaniel Graham, Mankato, Minn., winter 2006 graduate Courtney Daniels, Westby, and seniors Linda Hurd, Osceola, Rodney Kouba, Hudson, Lenon, Matthew Nier, Eagle River, Michael Schwartz, Eau Claire, Jordan Spina, Eau Claire, and Sternberg presented "Investigation of Coastal Erosion along Hapuna Beach, Hawaii" with Jol and Faulkner.
  • Bode presented "GPR and ERT Investigation of a Coastal Archeological Site: Yavne Yam, Israel" with Jol.
  • Senior Lynn Hilgendorf, Tomahawk, and junior Amy Ledin, Superior, presented "School Consolidations and Community Decline, Lessons for Wisconsin" with assistant professor Lisa Theo.
  • Senior Bryan Frenz, Tomah, presented "Hoop Dreams, The Geography of Fans of the NBA" with Bawden.

Several faculty also presented during the Annual Meeting:

  • Professor Ingolf Vogeler presented "Topographic Map Exercise IV: Las Vegas-Geography of Sin and Sexism."
  • Jol participated in a panel discussion titled "Coastal Photographs: Developing a New Coastal Photo CD."
  • Professor Sean Hartnett presented "The Geography of the 2005 Chicago Marathon."
  • Theo participated in a panel discussion titled "Standing on the Threshold: Experiences of Women and Men at the Start of an Academic Career in Geography."
  • Kaldjian presented "Maintaining the Milk Mystique: Mexican labor in Dairy Land."
  • Jol and Havholm presented "Coastal Foredune Genesis and Growth, a Ground Penetrating Radar Perspective."
