UW-Eau Claire Forensics Team Starts Season Strong

RELEASED: Sept. 30, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team began its competitive season by traveling to Kirkville, Mo., for the "Show Me Swing" tournament at Truman State University. The "Show Me," sponsored by the Truman Forensics Team, was held Saturday, Sept. 24, and the "Show Me Again," sponsored by the Truman Forensics Alumni Union, was held Sunday, Sept. 25. UW-Eau Claire took second place at both tournaments.

In addition to the team placements, UW-Eau Claire students took top honors in individual sweepstakes. Senior Chris Conklin, Green Bay, took second place in individual sweepstakes on Saturday and won on Sunday, while teammate Junior Christine Zani, Hurley, took first place on Saturday and third place on Sunday.

Following are the individual results from Saturday's "Show Me" tournament:

Zani placed first in persuasion, first in duo interpretation with sophomore Hilary Rasmussen, Eau Claire, second in communication analysis, and second in duo interpretation with Conklin. Conklin also took first place in impromptu speaking and fourth place in after-dinner speaking.

Junior Amy Oldakowski, Sobieski, placed first in informative speaking and made it to the semi-finals in impromptu speaking.

Senior Betsy Schroeder, Le Center, Minn., took second place in persuasive speaking.

Following are the individual results from Sunday's "Show Me Again" tournament:

Zani placed first in communication analysis, second in persuasive speaking, second in duo interpretation with Conklin and third place in duo interpretation with Rasmussen. Conklin also took first place in after-dinner speaking, third place in impromptu speaking, third place in extemporaneous speaking and fourth place in dramatic interpretation.

Oldakowski placed third in informative speaking and sixth in impromptu speaking.

Schroeder took fourth place in persuasive speaking and fifth place in informative speaking.
