EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present its annual Choral Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8.

UW-Eau Claire is known nation wide as " Wisconsin's Singing University" for its unusually large choral department and the quality of its performers. The festival serves as an opportunity for many of Wisconsin and Minnesota's best high school vocalists to learn about UW-Eau Claire's vocal and choral department.

The festival begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, with A Cappella Extravaganza in Schofield Auditorium of Schofield Hall. The performance gives students and community members a peek at the variety of a cappella ensembles the UW-Eau Claire campus offers. The featured groups this year are the UW-Eau Claire Chamber Choir, Fifth Element, Girls Night Out, Impromptu and the Innocent Men. The Eau Claire Memorial Madrigals will also be presenting selections at the event.

The Choral Area Concert will feature Women's Concert Choral and The Singing Statesmen at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. WoCo, under the direction of Alan Rieck, associate professor of music, will open the performance, featuring music by Z. Randall Stroope, Philip Schroetter and Richard Kidd. They will end with a traditional Chinese piece. The Singing Statesmen, directed by Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music, will feature works by composers Ronald Nelson, J. A. Parks and others. The two ensembles will jointly perform "Good News, The Chariots Comin'" by Moses Hogan.

The finale to this year's Choral Festival will be the Festival Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in Gantner Concert Hall. Schwartzhoff and his UW-Eau Claire Concert Choir will open the concert with "Haec Dies" by Vijay Singh. They also will feature works by Stroope and Hogan. Richard Fletcher, professor of music, will accompany the choir on clarinet in Clausen's "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair."

The Festival Concert will feature the Prior Lake High School Concert Choir as this year's guest high school choir. The choir will begin with "Daemon Irrepit Callidus," which translates to "The Devil Sneaks Expertly." The Prior Lake choir also will perform "Sing Me to Heaven" by Daniel Gawthrop, "The Boy who Picked Up His Feet to Fly" by Joshua Shank and the finale from "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert and Sullivan.

Outstanding vocal soloists also will be selected to perform prepared selections at the Festival Concert. The top three finalists will be chosen from these soloists to receive scholarships for their freshman year at UW-Eau Claire.

The concert will conclude with a performance by the UW-Eau Claire Honor Choir. Both Rieck and Schwartzhoff will conduct the ensemble. The Honor Choir is comprised of visiting students from various high schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Tickets for A Cappella Extravaganza are $5 and are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC. Admission to the Choral Area Concert and the Festival Concert is free.
