First Fridays Program Opens with TV News Reporter Anna Wagnild

RELEASED: Sept. 22, 2005

Anna WagnildEAU CLAIRE — Anna Wagnild, news reporter with TV 13, will take the audience "Behind the Scenes in the Newsroom" at an Oct. 7 presentation that will kick off the First Fridays colloquium for senior citizens this season. A free continental breakfast will precede her formal presentation. Doors open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m.; the program begins at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge at Christ Church Cathedral (corner of Lake and Farwell in downtown Eau Claire).

First Fridays events occur on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January, at no cost to the senior community. The theme of the 2005-06 season is "All Aboard the Eau Claire Express." Those whose "boarding passes" have been stamped each month will be eligible for a grand prize drawing at the May presentation.

The complete schedule for the year follows:

  • Friday, Nov. 4 — Global warming will be discussed by Crispin Pierce, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of public health.
  • Friday, Dec. 2 — The UW-Eau Claire Trombone Ensemble, conducted by Phillip Ostrander, will perform music for the winter season.
  • Friday, Feb. 3 — The UW-Eau Claire Peer Diversity Educators will present a program about how to accept and relate to differences in others.
  • Friday, March 3 — The Very Reverend Bruce N. Gardner, interim dean of Christ Church Cathedral, will present a poetry reading.
  • Friday, April 7 — Rick Koziel, director of Beaver Creek Reserve, will discuss the facility in a program titled "Connecting People with Nature."
  • Friday, May 5 — UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff members Christa Garvey, Tim Lane and Beverly Soll will present a recital of chamber music for oboe, flute and piano.

For the safety of our senior citizen audience, programs will be cancelled if the Eau Claire School District has cancelled or delayed classes in the case of a blizzard or other hazardous weather.

First Fridays began three years ago when the Activities and Programs office of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Eau Claire teamed up to present a new monthly program for senior citizens. The program is funded in part by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts.

First Fridays is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Hinners of the UW-Eau Claire Activities and Programs office and is hosted by Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral. The mission of First Fridays is to provide no-cost entertainment and educational experiences for senior citizens of the extended Chippewa Valley community through shared community and university sponsorship.
