UW-Eau Claire to Offer Math Enrichment Opportunity for Students Ages 5-15

RELEASED: Sept. 19, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension will offer Math for Young Achievers, a program for students with exceptional mathematical abilities. The multi-level program for elementary and middle school students emphasizes improving mathematical proficiency and enhancing mental math abilities. In its seventh year, the program boasts several graduates who are now in advanced university mathematics programs. Classes will be held Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. beginning Oct. 8 and concluding Dec. 17 (no classes on Nov. 26) at Campus School on the UW-Eau Claire campus.

Once a student is enrolled, program director Dr. Mohamed Elgindi, mathematics professor at UW-Eau Claire, will assess skills and place students at the appropriate program level in consultation with both parents and teachers. Elgindi tailors the course curriculum to each student's needs, and students advance through the program levels at their own pace. Adjustments will be made in the first several sessions if students advance quickly.

The class fee is $195 for instruction and materials. To register or for additional information, call UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension at (715) 836-3636/toll-free (866) 893-2423, or visit the Continuing Education Web site.
