Tip Sheet for the Week of Sept. 5, 2005

RELEASED: Sept. 2, 2005

Story/Photo Idea
Students will do community service projects from noon-5 p.m. Sept. 5 through the "Labor of Love" initiative.
They'll choose from several projects in the Eau Claire area, including: cleaning at Big Falls; helping at the Bolton Refuge House; cleaning and organizing at the Boys & Girls Club; helping at the Children's Museum; weeding gardens for the Community Beautification Association; yard work, dog walking and cleaning at the Eau Claire County Humane Association; and painting at Hand-in-Hand. Students will meet at noon in Towers' lobby. Transportation will be provided to the sites. For details, contact Paula Stuettgen at (715) 836-4803 or stuettpj@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
First-year students will attend an event Sept. 8 intended to help them make responsible choices about alcohol, sex and drugs. The event will pair Party House, an award-winning local program, with presentations by Randy and Ruthie, stars of "The Real World." Party House is an interactive program that allows students, while sober, to see the dangers of high-risk drinking. It'll begin at 6:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. The program will reflect current issues facing students. Randy and Ruthie will go on stage at 8 p.m. Ruthie battled alcohol problems on "The Real World." She's overcome her issues and explains how crazy life gets when alcohol/drugs take over. Randy worked in bars and has seen the effects that abuse can cause. A U.S. Department of Education grant to reduce high-risk drinking on campus is partly funding the project. As part of the grant program, UW-Eau Claire hopes for a 5 percent reduction in high-risk drinking by first-year students over the next two years. Interviews with presenters must be scheduled in advance by contacting Paula Stuettgen at (715) 836-4803 or stuettpj@uwec.edu. For program details, contact Paul Shepherd, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life, at (715) 836-3630 or shephepr@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
Area businesses, city departments and organizations will meet students at the Campus Community Connection Sept. 7.
The showcase of city resources, services and retailers will run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall. For details, contact Paula Stuettgen at (715) 836-4833.

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire will present a recital of chamber music on Sept. 11. The free concert, which begins at 2 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center, is dedicated to the memory of those whose lives were lost or changed in the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Musicians are soprano Mitra Sadeghpour, oboist Christa Garvey and flutist Tim Lane — members of the UW-Eau Claire music faculty, with pianist Beverly Soll, the arts/events coordinator. For details, call Jennifer Hinners at (715) 836-2787.

Calendar Items
Administrative offices will be closed Sept. 5
in honor of the Labor Day holiday.
