Tip Sheet for the Week of Oct. 31, 2005

RELEASED: Oct. 31, 2005

Story Idea
Science faculty and students will work with cutting edge technology in molecular biology thanks to a genetic analysis system recently installed in the biology department.
The state-of-the art equipment will benefit students who are interested in careers involving genetics and genomics. The biology department purchased the $120,000 gene sequencing instrument with the help of a grant from Genomics Educational Grant from Beckman Coulter Inc., a life science research and diagnostic company. UW-Eau Claire students in the lab sections of several classes and students working with faculty on research projects will use the equipment. Using this kind of technology during their undergraduate years will give UW-Eau Claire students an edge when they go to graduate schools or to work in industry where this kind of instrumentation is commonly used. The instrument also will help students better understand the increasing importance of computer technology as a tool for revealing and characterizing complex patterns in biological systems. For details, contact Julie Anderson, assistant professor of biology, at (715) 836-3860 or anderju@uwec.edu, or Lloyd Turtinen, professor of biology, at (715) 836-3506 or turtinen@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
A new free searchable database will help connect UW-Eau Claire alumni employers and UW-Eau Claire alumni who are seeking employment.
Through Alumni CareerLink, alumni employers can list job openings within their organizations and review the profiles of alumni who have posted their profiles. UW-Eau Claire alumni who are seeking employment can search for positions and post their profiles for employers to review. The service was developed after a number of alumni requested such a program. Alumni employers often want to help other Blugolds get started in their careers or move up the career ladder. For more information, contact Jeanne Skoug, director of Careers Services, at (715) 836-5358 or skougjm@uwec.edu, or John Bachmeier, director of Alumni Relations, at (715) 836-5189 or bachmejg@uwec.edu.
