Amy Hoyord and Megan Schultz to Present Senior Dance Recital

RELEASED: Oct. 31, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire seniors Amy Hoyord, Apple Valley, Minn., and Megan Schultz, Plover, will perform a senior dance recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Riverside Theatre. The performance is free and open to the public.

The dancers have dedicated the program, which will include a variety of solo and ensemble works, to fellow dancer Jessie Rozga, who was injured in the recent bus crash involving the Chippewa Falls High School Marching Band.

The program will open with twelve dancers performing "Right Now," a jazz piece choreographed by Hoyord and Schultz to the Van Halen song by the same name. According to Schultz, the piece "deals with fighting the adversities we face in this world."

Next on the program is a solo performance by Hoyord, dancing "True Companion," a piece she choreographed to Marc Cohn's composition by the same name.

Hoyord describes the next piece, "Tribute to Courage," as a "thank you to all of America's courageous servicemen and women." The piece is danced to "A Call to Courage" by William Ross and was jointly choreographed by Hoyord, Schultz, and the four other dancers featured in the piece.

"Breathe," choreographed by Schultz to music of the same name by The Prodigy, features seven dancers, including Schultz and Hoyord, in a tap piece that features multiple rhythms danced at the same time.

Schultz will finish the first half of the program with a solo performance to "Far Behind" by Candlebox.

The second half of the program will open with a piece that was presented at the American College Dance Festival. "Portrait of Interpretation," choreographed by Hoyord to "Abdulmajid" by Philip Glass, will feature eight dancers, including Hoyord and Schultz. The modern dance piece was inspired by a short story by Ambrose Pierce about a young boy who finds himself alone in the midst of a war.

Schultz was one of three dancers who choreographed the next piece, "Trinkets," to the music "Comptine d'un Autre Ete" by Yann Tiersen. The performers are Schultz, Hoyord and co-choreographer Crystal Pelletier.

"Fabric," choreographed by Hoyord, is another modern dance piece that will be presented at the American College Dance Festival next spring. It features six dancers, including Hoyord and Schultz, dancing to "Aperuta" and "La Partida," two pieces composed by guitarist Gustava Santaolalla and included on the soundtrack of "The Motorcycle Diaries." A 40-foot length of fabric is used in the piece to create unusual shapes and effects.

The recital will close with a piece choreographed by Hoyord and Schultz to "Ain't Goin Down" by Garth Brooks. The piece features six dancers, including Hoyord and Schultz, in "a free-spirited tap dance with a country line-dance feel."
