Media Memo: Funeral and Memorial Services for Branden Atherton

RELEASED: Oct. 19, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Funeral and memorial services have been finalized for Branden Atherton, 24, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior music education major killed in the Oct. 16 collision of a bus carrying Chippewa Falls High School marching band members, teachers, chaperones and family members.

A memorial service will be held at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Community members are welcome to attend.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 21, at Elmbrook Church, 777 S. Barker Road, Brookfield. Visitation is from 3-5 p.m. and the funeral service is at 5:30 p.m. A private burial will follow.

The Atherton family has established the Branden Atherton Memorial Music Scholarship fund through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Proceeds will be used to benefit music students at Chippewa Falls and Waukesha West high schools. Memorial gifts should be sent to the address below with a note that the donation is in honor of Branden Atherton. Checks should be made payable to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Update on Hospitalized Students

Ruth Weiland, 19, a sophomore biology major from Chippewa Falls, has been released from the hospital and is now recuperating at home. Amy Bowen, 22, a senior music major from Chippewa Falls, is hospitalized in fair condition at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire. Jessica Rozga, 21, a junior management major from Franklin, remains in serious condition in intensive care at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
