'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' to Screen at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Oct. 10, 2005

'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' posterEAU CLAIRE — The lighthearted revisionist Western "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) will be presented Oct. 20-23 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Winner of four Academy Awards and one of the most popular and highest-grossing Westerns ever made, the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Based on the historical exploits of two outlaw buddies, the film stars Paul Newman as the cocky outlaw Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford (in his breakthrough role) as the taciturn, fast-drawing Sundance Kid. Leaders of the famed Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, Butch and Sundance realize that the once-Wild West has become too civilized for them after they rob one train too many and end up with a relentless superposse on their trail.

"Instead of the ultra-violence typical of other outlaw films, the screenplay (William Goldman's first) and the direction of George Roy Hill focused on the endearing mis-adventures of the bandits/heroes," wrote Tim Dirks (The Greatest Films). "Historical antecedents for the two daring 'Robin Hood' outlaws actually existed, two notorious figures who were sadly anachronistic for their turn-of-the-century times ... Their exploits were perfect for a film that was intended to portray outlaws who mock and defy authority and the Establishment."

The 100-minute film is rated PG.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
