Well-known Jazz Violinist Randy Sabien to Teach and Perform at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Oct. 7, 2005

Randy SabienEAU CLAIRE — Internationally known jazz violinist Randy Sabien will visit the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to present several string jazz clinics throughout the day and perform a concert/jam session at 8 p.m. in The Cabin of Davies Center.

The USA Today wrote, "Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The best of both can be found in the superb Randy Sabien ... he combines classical technique and folk energy in a program that's still strictly jazz."

At noon Wednesday, Sabien will meet with UW-Eau Claire's Jazz I Ensemble in Room 139 of the Haas Fine Arts Center for a one-hour clinic.

From 1 to 2 p.m. he will meet for lunch with members of the student chapters of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the American String Teachers Association in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. IAJE and ASTA are sponsoring Sabien's campus visit.

From 2 to 4 p.m. in the Arrowhead Room, Sabien will present another string jazz clinic open to anyone. All who attend the clinics are welcome to join Sabien in a jam session during his evening Cabin performance. All events are free and open to the public.

Educated at the University of Illinois and Boston's Berklee College of Music, Sabien has called northern Wisconsin home since 1989. A frequent guest artist with symphonies around the country, he has released seven albums or discs and reportedly has several more in the works. Although his discography is predominantly jazz, he also has covered country swing, blues and rock and roll.
