EAU CLAIRE — Homecoming Week, one of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's largest annual events, will be held Oct. 9-16 — highlighted by numerous activities, a parade and football game.

With the theme " Battle of the Blues [Blugolds vs. Blue Devils]: Burn, Baby, Burn!" Homecoming is expected to draw thousands of alumni back to Eau Claire to join students, faculty, staff and the public in the celebration.

During the week students will select Homecoming royalty and participate in various University Activities Commission activities including window painting, sand sculpture building and competing in games. Clues to the annual medallion hunt will begin to appear in the student newspaper, The Spectator, on Oct. 6.

The student talent show "Varsity Night Live!" will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in Zorn Arena. Horace "H.B." Sanders, a nationally noted comedian who has shared the stage with entertainers such as Chris Rock, Aretha Franklin and an international tour with Sinbad, will host the show. Arsenio Hall stated it best: "Horace is like Sara Lee… Nobody doesn't like him." Sanders will preside over a lineup that includes Jazz Ensemble I; a martial and healing arts demonstration by the student organization Hwa Rang Do/Tae Soo Do; the Singing Statesmen; and many other student acts that have competed for slots on the show. The coronation of Homecoming royalty will take place during intermission.

Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center, and will be sold at the door. Admission is $7 for the general public, $5 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID card, or $2.50 for those wearing a 2005 Homecoming button.

Higherground, in Crest Wellness Center, will host a Homecoming Disco Inferno/Club Mercury dance on Friday, and a retro Disco Inferno/'70s Night on Saturday. Both events start at 10 p.m. A valid university or college ID is required. Admission is $1, or free to anyone wearing a 2005 Homecoming button.

The Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Grand and First Avenues, proceeding south to Water Street, turning down Water Street and ending at Second Avenue. The UW-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band, conducted by assistant professor of music and theatre arts Randy Dickerson, will lead the parade that includes floats and non-musical marching units. High school bands will perform and compete along the parade route. Dr. Roger Selin, professor of accounting and recipient of the 2005 UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Teaching Award, will be grand marshal.

After the parade, shuttle buses will take football game fans to Carson Park beginning at noon from the corner of Second Avenue and Water Street, Fifth Avenue and Water Street, and Towers Hall. Shuttles will run continuously until 30 minutes after the game. Parking is allowed in Carson Park by entering from Lake Street.

No carry-ins or tailgating is permitted in Carson Park.

The traditional alumni pre-game Homecoming festival, "Blugold Fever Fest," will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with music, food and beverage tents in the Pine Pavilion at Carson Park. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Marching Band will perform disco tunes, and the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association will sponsor an alumni tent. Festival admission is free; proof of age is required to purchase beer at the festival.

The UW-Eau Claire Blugolds will play the UW-Stout Blue Devils at the Homecoming football game Saturday at 1 p.m. in Carson Park. Admission is free at the gate for all UW-Eau Claire student ID card holders; for all others, advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets are on sale at the Service Center and can be purchased at the gate. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $5 for UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff; $4 for those age 62 and over; or $3 for those age 17 and under, and for UW-Stout students (ID required).

The Alumni Association will host a free post-game party, "Disco Fever, Blugold Style," at 4 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Alumni can meet old classmates, friends and teachers as they step back in time to the days of polyester, platform shoes and 1970s disco music. There will be door prizes, as well as prizes for the best men's and women's costumes. The party will feature appetizers and a cash bar of beverages from Leinenkugel's.

Homecoming competitions will culminate with the annual Adopt-a-Block neighborhood clean up on Sunday afternoon. Student teams will spread out over the Historic Randall Park Neighborhood to pick up trash left from the weekend's festivities.

Homecoming buttons are on sale for $1 weekdays through Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the east lobby of Davies Center. Also sold at Homecoming events, Homecoming buttons are required for participation in all activities. Buttons are worth reduced admission to the "Varsity Night Live!" show, discounts on select University Bookstore items, and free admission to the events at Higherground.

UW-Eau Claire Homecoming activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate and the Alumni Association. Numerous campus organizations sponsor and host individual events. A schedule of group reunions and events is available online.

For more information about events, call the Activities and Programs office, (715) 836-4833. For more information about alumni activities, contact the Alumni Association, (715) 836-3266.
