'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' to Screen
at UW-Eau Claire Dec. 8-11

RELEASED: Nov. 30, 2005

Adventures of Baron Munchausen posterEAU CLAIRE — "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (1988) will conclude the fall semester's film series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Dec. 8-11. Monty Python's Terry Gilliam transports viewers to the magical world of the impossible in this witty spectacle, screening at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

The real Baron Munchausen (1720-1797) was a cavalry officer who had a penchant for embellishing his war stories to the point where he became a mythical figure in European history.

"Terry Gilliam's film is, in itself, a tribute to the spirit of the good baron," reported critic Roger Ebert. "Gilliam must have had to embellish a few war stories himself, to get Columbia Pictures to spend a reported $46 million on this project, which is one of the three or four most expensive films ever made. The special effects are astonishing, but so is the humor with which they are employed. ... These adventures are told with a cheerfulness and a light touch that never betray the time and money it took to create them. It's one thing to spend $46 million; it's another to spend it insouciantly."

John Neville stars as the baron who lives without reason in his fanciful world, and Sarah Polley is his sidekick and conscience, a child who actually believes his stories. The surreal fairy tale features cameos by Robin Williams, Uma Thurman, Oliver Reed and Sting.

The 125-minute film is rated PG.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby and at the door. The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
