Musical Events for the Week of Nov. 28

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Nov. 28. All events are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Nov. 29:

  • The Cane Mutiny Bassoon Ensemble and the Eau Claire Oboe Band will present a joint concert at 5 p.m. in Philips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The Eau Claire Oboe Band will open the concert with "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" by Handel. The Cane Mutiny Bassoon Ensemble's first selection, "Four Allemandes" by Johann Schop, will follow. Other pieces to be featured by the ensembles are Julius Weissenborn's "Turkish March" and "Strenuous Life" by Scott Joplin.
  • Senior Josef Gapko, Eau Claire, and senior David Grossman, St. Paul, Minn., will perform a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. in Philips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Gapko's first set of selections will include "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind" and "Oh Come, Oh Come, My Dearest" by Thomas Arne and "Flow My Tears" by John Dowland. Grossman will follow with "La Pescatrice" by Alfredo Catalani and "Tu Ojillos Negros" by Manuel de Falla. Works by composers such as Gabriel Fauré, Debussy, Schubert and Ralph Vaughan Williams also will be featured in the concert.

Thursday, Dec. 1:

  • Jazz Ensemble IV and Jazz Ensemble V will hold a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Jazz V will open the concert with "Recycled Blues" by Ed Wilson. They also will perform pieces by Mongo Santamaria, Frank Mantooth and others. Jazz IV will present works by Duke Ellington titled "At Home and Abroad with Duke Ellington." They also will feature a performance of Sammy Nestico's "A Switch in Time." Both ensembles are under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music. Junior Sean Carey, Lake Geneva, junior John Dehaven, Verona, sophomore Adam Braatz, Sun Prairie, and Stephen Elfstrand will serve as student conductors for the concert.
