UW-Eau Claire's Jazz I Concert to Feature Premiere and Guest Artist

Brian BrivnaEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's award-winning Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

In addition to a variety of jazz compositions featuring solos by members of Jazz I, highlights of the concert will include presentation of "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs," a jazz concert work by Leonard Bernstein, and the premiere of "Under the Wire," a jazz clarinet concerto by Gordon Goodwin. Guest artist Brian Grivna will perform on clarinet in both these pieces.

Grivna began performing at age 12 as Young Artist clarinet soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra. He added saxophone and flute the following year and by age 15 was subbing for his teacher in commercial dance bands. After receiving a bachelor's degree in English literature from Dartmouth College, he worked in jazz, commercial, and theater music before joining the Buddy Rich Band in 1971. He toured with Rich for almost two years, recording four RCA albums and several television shows.

Grivna was the staff woodwind performer at the Guthrie Theater from 1973-1983. He left the Guthrie to freelance and teach, recording two CDs with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and one with the Minnesota Orchestra. He teaches at the University of Minnesota, Macalester College and in his home studio. He performs jazz at local clubs and plays saxophone and clarinet for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Children's Theater Company in Minneapolis. He also plays in pit orchestras for traveling musicals such as "The Lion King," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and "Victor/Victoria."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
