UW-Eau Claire Students Win Research Poster Competition

RELEASED: Nov. 17, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students and their faculty research partner won first place in the poster presentation competition at the Seven Rivers Research Symposium at Viterbo University in La Crosse. The symposium was held Nov. 11 and focused on undergraduate research.

Juniors Ellen Christensen, River Falls, and Miranda Myers, Stevens Point, and assistant professor of biology Sasha Showsh won the first place prize for their poster titled "Characterization of Novel Azo Dye-degrading Bacteria." The research was funded in part by the UW-Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Merck Corporation.

Dr. Paula Kleintjes, chair of the biology department at UW-Eau Claire, noted that the hands-on research of these three followed by presentation of their results at a professional venue exemplifies the greatness of faculty-undergraduate student collaborative research at UW-Eau Claire.

"The department is proud of their contribution to science and the peer recognition of a job well accomplished," said Kleintjes.
