Jazz II to Perform Fall Concert Honoring Wayne Senior and Benny Carter

RELEASED: Nov. 10, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The first half of the concert will be a tribute to New Zealand composer Wayne Senior and will feature his compositions. Senior will serve as guest conductor for the band during the first set. Senior has written for many commercial mediums, including a long stint as a composer and arranger for the BBC Television Network. The band will perform "Peace in Our Time," "Truly Madly Deeply Blue," "Voyage of Discovery" and "The Touch of Your Lips" among others.

The second half of the concert is dedicated to the music of Benny Carter and will feature Carter's "Kansas City Suite," a work in ten movements composed for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1960. Duke Ellington once said of Carter, "The problem of expressing the contributions that Benny Carter has made to popular music is so tremendous it completely fazes me, so extraordinary a musician is he."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID.
