Media Memo: Resident Assistant Restrictions

TO: News and Assignment Editors

FROM: Mike Rindo

DATE: Nov. 9, 2005

SUBJECT: Resident Assistant Restrictions

UW-Eau Claire continues its review of longstanding policies and practices relating to certain activities by resident assistants in their rooms and in the residence halls where they live. Please reference the attached fact sheet pertaining to these issues.

Interim Chancellor Vicki Lord Larson initiated the internal review after concerns were raised about current campus policies. An Oct. 10 letter from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) questioned the university’s policy prohibiting resident assistants from leading religious study groups in their rooms or residence halls where they live.

The university is currently gathering information and seeking advice from legal counsel to ensure UW-Eau Claire practices and policies comply with legal standards. Information will be shared with the campus community when the review is completed and decisions regarding the policy are made. In the meantime, contact Mike Rindo, executive director of University Communications, at (715) 836-4742 or rindomj@uwec.edu with questions.
