UW-Eau Claire Poet/Professor Publishes New Poetry Collection

RELEASED: Nov. 8, 2005

Bruce TaylorEAU CLAIRE — "Pity the World: Poems Selected & New," a compilation of poetry by Bruce Taylor, professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, was recently published by Plain View Press of Austin, Texas.

The poems included represent 30 years of Taylor's work and have appeared in over 100 different magazines and anthologies, including Carve, The Chicago Review, The Exquisite Corpse, The Formalist, Light, The Literary Review, The Nation, Nerve, The New York Quarterly, Poetry, and E2ink-1: the Best of the Online Journals. Some have also appeared in Taylor's five previous collections of poems.

Those praising "Pity the World" include Max Garland, fellow poet, UW-Eau Claire professor of English and author of the prize-winning "The Postal Confessions," and local writer Mike Perry of "Population 485" fame.

"Taylor's poems are wide ranging and powerful," wrote Garland. "In poem after poem there's a both a story and a song. If, as one of the poems claims, 'the true prayer is listening,' then these are poems that should not only be read, but 'listened' to, in every sense of the word."

Perry added, " Taylor's poetic characters bluster loudly and weep softly. His jazz hounds, pub crawlers and garden-tenders know all men are fools, but they refuse to sing the cynic's tinny tune. Against this backdrop of stale smoke, seasoned dreams, and suburban evenings, the instants of beauty surprise and sparkle all the more. These poems are wisdom purchased with the wages of sin."

Taylor, who has won awards and fellowships from the Bush Artist Foundation, Wisconsin Arts Board, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and Fulbright-Hayes, is available for readings and public appearances.
