in UW-Eau Claire's Foster Gallery

RELEASED: Nov. 1, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Foster Gallery will present "Typesthetic: The Art of Typography" Nov. 3-23. Through a variety of styles and mediums, typography will be used as the basis for artistic expression, interpretation and communication.

An opening reception, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, will kick off the exhibit in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The exhibit, curated by Christos Theo, professor of art & design, will feature the work of Elliot Earls, Sybille Hagmann, Bill Moran and Tiit Raid. All exhibitors have unique, defining styles that have led to successful careers in the design field. An open discussion with the artists, set for 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 4, in the gallery, will give students and the public an opportunity to hear from the artists first hand.

Earls is a performance artist and designer whose work is reflected in film, theatre, typography, education and more. His typography design is distributed worldwide by Emigre Inc., and his posters are part of the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution. Earls is designer-in-residence and department chair of 2D design at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

Hagmann studied graphic design in California and Switzerland and has worked for a variety of educational institutions. Her clientele includes the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Fisher Gallery of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; and more.

Moran graduated from UW-Stout with a degree in graphic design and went on to open his own graphic design company, Blinc Publishing, in St. Paul. Moran has taught type design and typography history at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and has written and designed typography books. He won the 2004/05 Jerome Foundation/ MCBA Bock Arts Fellowship award.

Raid, originally from Tartu, Estonia, got his bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts from the University of Minnesota. He is professor emeritus at UW-Eau Claire, where he taught art for 35 years. Raid has exhibited throughout the Midwest and now lives in Fall Creek.
