Tip Sheet for the Week of May 27, 2005

RELEASED: May 27, 2005

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire history Professor James Oberly has released a new book, which is the first history of the modern-day Mohicans. In the book, "A Nation of Statesmen," Oberly narrates the Mohicans' (also known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Indians) story from the time of their relocation to Wisconsin in the 1820s through the post-World War II era. Mohican leaders have long been fluent in English, allowing Oberly to draw on a number of documents, which included personal memoirs. Oberly also worked closely with the tribe to prepare the history. Dr. Oberly is available to talk with the media about his book. You can reach him at (612) 379-3397 or joberly@uwec.edu.

Story/Photo Idea
Members of the Eau Claire Noon Rotary Club will meet on campus Monday, June 6, to learn more about UW-Eau Claire's science programs. The group will meet at 11:30 a.m. outside Room 174 in the Phillips Science Hall. Dr. Doug Dunham, associate professor of physics and astronomy, and Dr. Mark Mc Ellistrem, associate professor of chemistry, will lead a 30-minute presentation. The UW-Eau Claire Foundation will then host a lunch for the visitors at noon in the Spruce-Tamarack Room of Davies Center. During the luncheon, UW-Eau Claire Foundation President Carole Halberg will make introductory comments and Interim Chancellor Vicki Lord Larson will be the featured speaker. Rotarians participate in outings such as this one several times a year as a way to expand their knowledge of local businesses and institutions. For details about the event, contact Marcia Van Beek at (715) 836-2765 or vanbeemr@uwec.edu. Van Beek is the Rotarian who is coordinating the campus visit and a member of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation staff.

Calendar Note
UW-Eau Claire offices will be closed and there will be no Summer Session classes on Monday, May 30, in honor of Memorial Day. The three-week Summer Session classes will resume and university offices will open again at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 31.
