EAU CLAIRE — Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire assistant professors of philosophy and religious studies will lead a discussion about religious and philosophical thoughts relating to end-of-life issues, a topic that's been the subject of much personal and public discussion thanks to recent high-profile news stories relating to the topic.
Dr. Charlene Burns and Dr. Sean McAleer will speak on "End of Life: Philosophical and Religious Perspectives" as part of the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association's "Let's Do Lunch" series from noon to 1 p.m. May 25 at Sweetwaters Restaurant.
"I will be talking about the kind of questions that religious belief systems ask," said Burns. "Sean will look at the questions from a more secular, philosophic view."
Burns said the talk will be driven by questions from the audience and Burns and McAleer hope for lots of audience participation. Some questions may include: Is it permissible to withdraw life-sustaining aid?; What matters more: quality of life or sanctity of life?; and Is the distinction between killing and letting die morally significant?
Upcoming "Lets Do Lunch" speakers, dates and topics include: Rob Reid, lecturer in UW-Eau Claire's foundation of education department and a member of the Newbery Award Selection Committee, June 29, "The Best Children's Books of 2005 (So Far); July 27, Dr. William Frankenberger, UW-Eau Claire professor of psychology, "Treating Children with Psychiatric Disorders: Is Medication Enough?"; and Dr. Rose-Marie Avin, UW-Eau Claire professor of economics, Aug. 29 "Globalization and the Third World: A Force for Good or Exploitation?"
The speaker series is open to the public. The cost is $10 per session and includes the presentation, buffet, beverage, tax and tip. Find details and reservation information online, or call (715) 836-3266.
