UW-Eau Claire Team of Business Students Claims Grand Championship in Global Market Competition

RELEASED: May 5, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire team of business students was the overall grand champion in the 17th Global Marketplace Competition administered by the University of Tennessee.

Three UW-Eau Claire teams also finished first in their respective industries: Universal Technology, Pinnacle and Nexwave. All will be listed in the Marketplace Hall of Fame.

“Universal was the overall grand champion," said Ronald Decker, professor of management and marketing and instructor for the marketing classes involved in the competition. " Eau Claire has never had one of those before. All 15 of our teams finished in the top three in their industries, something else never before accomplished by UW-Eau Claire. Our teams always fare very well against their international competitors, but this semester was the best ever.”

The 10-week Internet-based competition requires teams to use a sophisticated computer program that mimics the ever-changing global marketplace as students simulate starting up and running a marketing division or entrepreneurial firm. It deals with business basics and the interplay between marketing, manufacturing, finance, accounting and management. As teams build businesses, the simulation introduces new relevant issues. A narrative holds together the simulation, which is designed to read like a novel with student s acting as the characters.

UW-Eau Claire students were in the most difficult level of competition, playing against graduate students, executive development programs and other strong undergraduate programs. To win, teams must deliver customer value and profits.

Students on the grand championship team were Nicole Lisiecki, Stanley; John Kryiagis, Plymouth, Minn.; Nicholas Kapral, Oshkosh; and Paul Safarz, Bloomington, Minn. Students on the other first-place teams were Stacy Voight, Mayville; Sarah Bolstad, Franklin; Daniel Horwath, Arden Hills, Minn.; Kristin Skoug, Madison; Amanda Bergsbaken, Cecil; Katie Henrich, Mosinee; Gretchen Southworth, Bloomer; and Ryan Tschanz, Hartland.
