Two UW-Eau Claire Students Receive WAEOPP Scholarships

RELEASED: May 5, 2005

WAEOPP logoEAU CLAIRE — Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire affiliated students received two of three scholarships awarded by the Wisconsin Association of Education Opportunity Program Personnel at its spring conference last week.

Senior comprehensive social work major Rhonda Benavides, Eau Claire, participates in the UW-Eau Claire's Student Support Services program, and Lee Thao attends Eau Claire North High School but receives services through UW-Eau Claire's Upward Bound Program to gain preparation for post-secondary education.

WAEOPP is made up of staff members throughout the state who work with federal TRIO programs, including Upward Bound and Student Support Services, to serve low-income and first-generation college students. The organization awards a limited number of scholarships each year to students who participate in these programs. Students are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and financial need.

"Lee Thao is proof that, given the necessary opportunity, any student in this society can succeed in matriculating to the postsecondary level and achieve a college education," said Kimamo Wahome, director of Upward Bound.

Thao will be attending UW-Eau Claire this coming fall semester.

"Rhonda Benavides is the first Student Support Services participant to win this award in the three years that I've been at Eau Claire," said Bruce Ouderkirk, director of Student Support Services. "She has a distinguished record of academic achievement and of service to the university and the Eau Claire community."
