UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW Extension to Present Summer Art Program for Middle/High School Students

RELEASED: March 24, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW Extension will sponsor SmArt, a summer art program for middle and high school students.

The program — open to middle and high school students — will be held July 11-21 in the Haas Fine Arts Center. Classes meet Monday-Thursday, with morning classes from 9:30–11:30 a.m. and afternoon classes from 12:30– 2:30 p.m.

SmArt emphasizes hands-on experiences in various art disciplines. Students choose from six courses:

  • "Shibori Tie-Dye." Students create their own patterns on shirt or cloth using traditional Japanese Shibori dyeing techniques and contemporary tools and dyes.
  • "Fantasy in Architecture: The Style of Frank Gehry." Students learn about Frank Gehry's style and philosophy, which helped him create architectural masterpieces including the Guggenheim Building in Spain, Loyola Law School in Los Angles, and the Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
  • "Ceramic Sculpture & Pottery." Students create pottery, sculpture and jewelry using a variety of techniques and clays.
  • "Native American Art Forms." Students investigate how Native people used their environment to create everything from fire to clothing.
  • "Story Quilts." Students learn about African-American artist Faith Ringgold and study her quilts, which combine fine art, folk art and narrative. Students use fabric and paint to create their own stories.
  • "Portrait Drawing & Painting." Students discuss portraits by artists, and choose a subject to create a portrait from sketch to final painting.
  • "Art through Photography." Students receive expert instruction from an award-winning professional free-lance photographer who is a contributor to Time magazine.
  • "Watercolor Castles." Students practice watercolor techniques beginning with abstract designs, and then create paintings inspired by British castles.

Tuition is $65 per class, plus a $25 materials fee. Eau Claire residents can waive tuition for one class per child. Classes fill quickly.

To register, contact UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education at (715) 836-3636, (866) UWEC4CE or ce@uwec.edu.
