Elder Care to Be the Topic of UW-Eau Claire
Alumni Association Speaker Series

RELEASED: March 18, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Caring for elderly parents while balancing work and personal commitments is the topic for a noon-hour luncheon presentation hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Alumni Association on Wednesday, March 30, at Sweetwaters Restaurant.

Katherine A. Rhoades, dean of UW-Eau Claire's College of Education and Human Sciences, will speak on "Love, Life and Work: The Challenge of Elder Care in the Era of Hypertasking" as part of the Alumni Association's "Let's Do Lunch" series from noon to 1 p.m.

The presentation is based on an article she co-authored with her sister about negotiating the delicate balance between life, love and work as they cared for their 92-year-old mother in her home during her terminal illness.

Rhoades notes that trying to care for her ailing mother and balance her career placed her in a position unlike any she'd ever experienced.

"Like most other adult children who are called upon to negotiate the social, physical, financial, and personal challenges of caring for their elder parents I felt as if I had arrived in uncharted territory without a map," said Rhoades.

This presentation is an attempt to help others chart their own course through the challenges of elder care. Community members are invited to come and to share their own experiences or to ask questions.

Upcoming "Let's Do Lunch" speakers, dates and topics include: Karen Maddox, R.N., M.S.N., UW-Eau Claire associate professor of family health nursing, April 27, "Adolescent Health: Building Assets, Reducing Risk"; Dr. Rose-Marie Avin, UW-Eau Claire professor of economics, May 25, "Globalization and the Third World: A Force for Good or Exploitation?"; Dr. William Frankenberger, UW-Eau Claire professor of psychology, June 22, "Treating Children with Psychiatric Disorders: Is Medication Enough?"

The speaker series is open to the public. The cost is $10 per session and includes the presentation, buffet, beverage, tax and tip. Find details and reservation information online, or call (715) 836-3266.
