National Geographic Photographer Jodi Cobb
to Present 'Hidden Worlds' at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: March 4, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Photographer Jodi Cobb's presentation "Hidden Worlds" will be the featured Forum presentation at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 14, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Schofield Auditorium, Schofield Hall.

As a staff photographer for the National Geographic Society, Cobb has worked in more than 50 countries, primarily in the Middle East and Asia. She was one of the first photographers to cross into China when it reopened to the West, traveling 7,000 miles in two months for the book, "Journey into China." Her travels also have taken her into Israel and the West Bank and into Saudi Arabia to document the hidden lives of women in that culture. Her book, "Geisha: The Life, the Voices, the Art" (1995), explores the hidden world of women in Japan.

"There are so many issues of women and their positions in very male-dominated societies around the world, living in very difficult situations," Cobb has said. "I would love to be able to help in some way by helping to document these situations and bringing them to light."

Cobb has been a major contributor to six National Geographic books, and her contributions to National Geographic magazine include 24 articles, most recently "21st Century Slaves," "The Enigma of Beauty" and "London." She was featured in "Women Photographers at National Geographic" (2000) and its accompanying exhibitions worldwide. Her photographs have been exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York; the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and other major galleries in the U.S. and abroad.

Tickets are $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.
