Tsunami to Be Topic of UW-Eau Claire International Roundtable

RELEASED: March 3, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Four University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire international students from countries affected by the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami will participate in an International Roundtable discussion March 9.

"Tsunami: Understanding the Deadly Wave" will begin at 4 p.m. March 9 in the Alumni Room of Davies Center.

Students participating in the discussion are Don Danushka Gunaratne of Sri Lanka, Indira Nugroho of Indonesia, Sandeep Bang of India, and Anjali Anand of Malaysia.

Kent Syverson, associate professor of geology, will facilitate the discussion.

The discussion will focus on the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami that hit the coasts of South and Southeast Asia. Many of the disaster's survivors lost their homes, families and properties. Roundtable participants will talk about how tsunamis are created and whether a similar disaster could occur in the United States. The students will share their personal insights relating to the December tragedy.
