Peter Phippen to Perform on UW-Eau Claire

Peter PhippenEAU CLAIRE — A free outdoor concert by ethnic flutist Peter Phippen will highlight the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Summer Session Programs for the week of July 11.

Performing a mix of the very old and the very new in music, Phippen will begin his show Monday at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall. Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.

Phippen's three CDs on the Canyon Records label — most recently "Night Song" (2003) — feature the haunting tones of the Native American flute, bamboo flute, Japanese shakuhachi and other ethnic flutes from around the world. Since 1993 this innovative performer has performed concerts, workshops, residencies and assembly programs across the country.

"The Lost Boys" (1987) will continue a summer festival of horror films, screening at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Davies Theatre. Jason Patric and Corey Haim star as two brothers who move to a new town and become convinced the area is frequented by vampires. Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Dianne Wiest and Edward Herrmann costar in Joel Schumacher's 97-minute film (rated R).
