Juneteenth Celebration Slated for June 16

Juneteenth Anniversary logoEAU CLAIRE — Eau Claire's fifth annual Juneteenth celebration will run from 5-8 p.m. June 16 at Mt. Simon Park in the Dells Pavilion (upper pavilion).

Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery, honors human rights and racial unity, said Cynthia Gray-Mash, an associate professor of foundations of education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and member of the Eau Claire Human Rights Coalition Planning Committee.

"Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures around the country," Gray-Mash said. "Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others sponsor Juneteenth-centered activities. Eau Claire proudly joins that tradition."

The Eau Claire event will bring together area residents to celebrate and visit about their commitment toward a more united community enriched by its diversity. Food, music, activities for children, and a brief program on the history of Juneteenth are planned.

The program includes:

5-6 p.m.: Activities for children by the Children's Museum of Eau Claire

5:30 p.m.: Music

6 p.m.: Dinner

6:30 p.m.: Program

7 p.m.: Dessert

In addition to Gray-Mash, several other UW-Eau Claire faculty, emeriti faculty and staff help coordinate the event. Virginia Wolf, minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Eau Claire, leads the planning committee.

Sponsors include the Eau Claire Human Relations Coalition, UW-Eau Claire's Office of Multicultural Affairs, Children's Museum of Eau Claire, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Eau Claire, Advocates for Multicultural Education, Mega Foods, Indianhead Foods, Culver's and Burger King.
