RELEASED: July 1, 2005

Story/Photo Idea
UW-Eau Claire's award-winning National Youth Sports Program will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an event from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the cafeteria in Hilltop Center on upper campus. The program has served more than 10,000 Chippewa Valley youth in the last 25 years. Created as a free summer camp for economically deprived families, NYSP provides academic, physical fitness and sports skill instruction for boys and girls ages 10-16. It aims to make them healthier citizens. The NYSP program at UW-Eau Claire, which began in 1981, has been recognized as one of the finest programs in the country, receiving the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence for 1991, 1998 and 2004, an achievement unmatched by any of the other 205 programs in the nation. Since 1988, the program has been among the top five NYSP programs in the country eight times and has won six additional Meritorious Awards. This year 600 young people are participating in NYSP, which began June 9 and will run through July 15. For details about Thursday's event or NYSP, contact Lisa Schuetz, NYSP activity director, at (715) 836-2176 or schuetlm@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
A recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that 2005 accounting graduates were in very high demand, with starting salary averages of $44,564. That demand was true of UW-Eau Claire accounting graduates, says Michael Wilson, chair of the accounting and finance department. Employers were very interested in hiring graduates for accounting positions and they also were interested in hiring accounting students for internships, he said. As the accounting profession has thrived, Wilson said he has noticed more students showing an interest in accounting as a major. Dr. Wilson is available to talk about how UW-Eau Claire accounting students and graduates are faring in the job market. You can reach him at (715) 836-2184 or wilsonmd@uwec.edu.

Calendar Note
UW-Eau Claire will be closed Monday, July 4, in honor of Independence Day. Classes will resume and offices will open again at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 5.
