EAU CLAIRE — The award-winning National Youth Sports Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate its 25th anniversary from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the cafeteria at Hilltop Recreation Center.

In attendance will be Sherry Harper, legislation director for U.S. Rep. Ron Kind; Eric Dick, deputy district director for Kind; and Dr. William Harms, associate vice chancellor of student services at UW-Eau Claire and a member of the board of directors of the National Youth Sports Corporation.

Created in 1969 as a free summer sports camp for economically disadvantaged youth, NYSP provides academic instruction, exposure to educational and career opportunities, and skills training and competition in a variety of sport activities designed to improve physical fitness and health habits. Program participants receive free medical screenings, daily transportation and nutritious meals.

The NYSP program at UW-Eau Claire, which began in 1981, has been recognized as one of the finest of the 205 programs in the nation, receiving the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence an unprecedented three times (1991, 1998 and 2004).

Since 1988, the program has been among the top five NYSP programs in the country eight times and has won six additional Meritorious Awards.

Lisa Schuetz, activity director for NYSP, credits the dedicated, hard-working program staff for creating a safe, fun, and educational environment for the thousands of children who have passed through NYSP. This year more than 600 young people aged 10-16 registered for the program, which began June 9 and will run through July 15.

"NYSP has served over 10,000 youth in the Chippewa Valley over the past 25 years," said Schuetz. "This program is and has been a strong tradition for the youth of our community.” Thomas Patt, director of University Recreation, has been involved with NYSP since he came to UW- Eau Claire in 1999 and currently serves as project administrator.

The 10-member board of the National Youth Sports Corporation oversees NYSP, as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Youth Education in Sports Program and the Police Athletic League Youth Enrichment Program. The three programs are sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the NCAA.
