Tip Sheet for the Week of Jan. 24, 2005

Current topics of interest in higher education in western Wisconsin

Story Idea
Management information systems students are helping Eau Claire area nonprofit agencies enhance their information technology. In the fall, 24 MIS students worked with six local agencies to identify long-term IT needs. This semester a new group of students will take over the project, focusing on design of the first IT project in each of the agency's plans. The work will continue in fall 2005 with the implementation and testing of the IT projects. The project gives students an opportunity to be involved in long-term IT planning, which will benefit them as they move into management positions after graduation. It helps nonprofits increase their effectiveness and service delivery capacity. A 2001 evaluation of United Way-supported agencies found that organizations typically did not include IT in their long-range plans. For details, contact Tom Hilton, chair of the MIS department, at (715) 836-3416 or hiltonts@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
A study will be published in the Journal of American College Health this month that examines the use of prescription stimulants by college students. Psychology professor William Frankenberger's research found that 17 percent of men and 11 percent of women students surveyed said they've illegally used drugs intended for children/adults with attention-deficit disorder. Forty-four percent said they knew someone who used the drugs illegally. Frankenberger said students said they use the drugs to stay awake because they feel pressured for time given the demands of school and other activities. Health care officials say the stimulants present health concerns because they increase heart rates and can have other side effects. Frankenberger — whose research in ADD/ADHD has earned him a national reputation — is available to discuss his research. Contact him at (715) 836-5020, (715) 836-4642 or frankewr@uwec.edu.
