Alcohol Education Training to Take Place Jan. 25

RELEASED: Jan. 24, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Seventeen student leaders and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will attend a daylong workshop Jan. 25 to prepare them to begin training students with the skills to prevent alcohol misuse among their peers.

The program is made possible by a $3,825 grant from M&L Brands, the local distributor for Miller and Leinenkugel beer, through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. M&L Brands general manager, Dave Boisvert, is a member of the task force and helped facilitate the grant.

Participants in the TIPS for the University train-the-trainer workshop, a national alcohol education program, will include a cross-section of residence assistants, peer health educators, student senators and student organization presidents.

"We're very pleased that our students and staff have this opportunity to get the kind of alcohol education training that other universities across the country are using," said Jodi Thesing-Ritter, associate dean of student development. "This will give us a national perspective for our local issues."

Ritter said workshop participants will become certified trainers and conduct training sessions for students during the spring semester.

"Our goals are to elevate the level of alcohol awareness training for our campus and to elevate our ability to disseminate information to decrease alcohol incidents on campus," Thesing-Ritter said. "We've had some terrible things happen to our students because of alcohol, including some very high profile deaths."

The Alcohol Task Force, appointed by Chancellor Donald Mash earlier this year, recommended TIPS for the University program. The task force, which is made up of campus and community representatives, is charged with developing a center for alcohol studies and education and other alcohol education initiatives.
