First Fridays to Present Program on Poland's
Past and Present

RELEASED: Feb. 18, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — First Fridays for 2005 will continue with a March 4 lecture titled "Poland: Then and Now," presented by Richard Kozbial. The event continues this year's theme for the series of programs for senior citizens — "Bringing the World Downtown: A Passport Season."

Richard Kozbial is originally from Toledo, Ohio, where he taught elementary school for 31 years. After retirement he taught at the University of Toledo for 12 more years, recently moving to Eau Claire to live with his daughter and son-in-law, both of whom teach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Kozbial's parents were born in Poland, and he keeps strong ties with his relatives there. He has visited Poland at least 15 times and has made observations about the changes that have occurred in that country in the past quarter century. For his presentation, Kozbial will show slides, share experiences from his visits and display memorabilia collected from Poland.

A free continental breakfast will precede the talk. Doors open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge at Christ Church Cathedral (corner of Lake and Farwell in downtown Eau Claire). The program follows at 9 a.m.

For the safety of the senior citizen audience, the program will be cancelled if the Eau Claire School District has cancelled or delayed classes due to weather conditions.

First Fridays is funded by grant support from the Downtown Eau Claire Business Improvement District, the AnnMarie Foundation and Xcel Energy, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts. The program is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Hinners of the UW-Eau Claire Activities and Programs office and Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral.

First Fridays events occur on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January, at no cost to the senior community. For more information about First Fridays or to be placed on a mailing list, call (715) 836-2787 [ARTS].
