Students Help Fight Hunger
with 'Empty Bowls' Event

RELEASED: Feb. 17, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Ceramics students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire art & design department are once again pitching in to help fight hunger in the Chippewa Valley. The students, under the direction of assistant professor of art & design Susan O'Brien, are donating more than 400 hand-made ceramic bowls to the Feed My People Food Bank for their upcoming "Empty Bowls" fund-raiser.

Student coordinators of this year's project are senior Tiffany Bailey, Bagley, and junior Glen Skolaski, Verona. Senior Rebecca Ouimette, Minocqua, designed the poster for the event.

"Empty Bowls," a benefit supper of soup, specialty breads and desserts, will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 East Lexington, Eau Claire.

The meal of soup, bread and desserts is being donated by Karen Severson, Great Harvest Bread, Co., and area churches and volunteers. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is providing matching funds for the event. Numerous area businesses also are co-sponsoring the event.

Ticket prices are $15 for supper and a hand-designed bowl, $8 for the supper alone and $40 for a family pack of two bowls and supper for up to five individuals. Children age 10 and younger are free. Advance ticket purchase is recommended as the number of bowls is limited. Tickets are available at Trinity Lutheran, First Presbyterian, First Congregational, Grace Lutheran, First Lutheran, Hope United Methodist, Immaculate Conception PREP and Youth Ministry Office, St. Patrick Catholic Church, UW-Eau Claire Service Center, most area grocery stores and the Feed My People Food Bank.

Pottery displays have been set up at ticket outlet churches to show samples of student work. In addition to involvement with "Empty Bowls," UW-Eau Claire students sponsor Hunger Week on campus each fall to raise money and awareness to help fight hunger.

Feed My People Food Bank is a food distribution center that supplies over 900,000 pounds of food to 50 area pantries and charitable organizations each year. The food that Feed My People distributes feeds approximately 4,000 low-income people in West-Central Wisconsin every month.
