UW-Eau Claire Winter Carnival Set for Feb. 9-13

EAU CLAIRE — The schedule of activities for Winter Carnival 2005 is set for Feb. 9-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Highlights include Ska Fest X featuring I Voted for Kodos; a comedy showcase featuring Alexandra McHale and The Available Cupholders; a "Mr. Freeze" pageant; and a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The celebration also features a number of outdoor recreation events. Events are free unless noted.

Thursday:

  • Two-hour dogsledding demonstration behind Governors Hall on upper campus; 2 p.m. Free rides will be given. More information is available from the Outdoor Recreation Center, (715) 836-3616.
  • Eight-ball billiard tourney; 7-10 p.m., Bowling and Billiards Center of Hilltop Center. Sign up in advance at University Recreation or at the BBC that night.
  • Mr. Freeze Pageant; 7-10 p.m., Higherground in Crest Wellness Center. A panel of judges will select the 2005 Winter Carnival royalty, Mr. Freeze, on the basis of talent, question and answer, winter apparel and formal wear. Host is Ice Princess, Senior Jen Lawton.
  • NOTA Open Prose and Poetry reading; 8 p.m., The Cabin of Davies Center.
  • "Casablanca" (1942); 6 and 8:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains star in one of the most perfect and best loved films of all time. Tickets are $1 for UW-Eau Claire students, or $2 for UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members, at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727. International Film Society memberships are available for $4.

Friday:

  • Cabin Camping and Lower Chippewa River Dog sledding and Snowshoeing. All necessary equipment is included in the trip price of $15, due at registration. The trip is limited to 8 participants; departure time will be set based on class schedule. More information is available at the Outdoor Recreation Center. Spend the night in a warm cabin and learn the art of mushing sled dogs in a remote area on lower Chippewa River.
  • Flutist Peter Phippen, international recording artist; 8 p.m., The Cabin of Davies Center. Refreshments will be sold.
  • The improvisational antics of The Available Cupholders and the hip comedic style of Alexandra McHale; 9 p.m., Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.
  • Winter Carnival Swing party; 10 p.m., Higherground in Crest Wellness Center.
  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"; midnight, Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Roger Ebert has called the 1975 cult film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Admission is $3 for UW-Eau Claire students, UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members. Tickets are available at the Service Center in advance and will be sold at the door just before show time.

Saturday:

  • Open Stage; 8 p.m., The Cabin of Davies Center. Refreshments will be sold.
  • Ska Fest X featuring the Minneapolis reggae band I Voted for Kodos, Urizen, Catch of the Day and Umbrella Bed; 7:30 p.m., Council Fire Room of Davies Center. International Connections will appear as special guest. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required in the bar area.
  • Club Mercury dance party; 10 p.m., Higherground in Crest Wellness Center.

Sunday:

  • Half price bowling; noon-6 p.m., Bowling and Billiards Center of Hilltop Center.

Winter Carnival activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate and University Recreation.
