UW-Eau Claire Program, Awards to Recognize National TRIO Day

RELEASED: Feb. 2, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will recognize National TRIO Day with a program and awards ceremony to be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in Davies Center. Awards will be presented to outstanding TRIO students and to UW-Eau Claire staff members who have provided exceptional service for the TRIO programs.

TRIO programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to promote the academic achievement of eligible students. The programs serve students whose parents do not have a college degree, students from families of limited income and students with disabilities. Program participants range in age from sixth-graders to adults.

UW-Eau Claire currently operates four TRIO projects: Upward Bound, Student Support Services, the Educational Opportunity Center and the McNair Program. A fifth TRIO project, Educational Talent Search, and an Upward Bound project are administered by the Eau Claire office of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The TRIO Day activities at UW-Eau Claire will include a reception from 3:30 to 4 p.m. in the Skylight Lounge and the reading of a university proclamation and awards ceremony in Davies Theatre from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Educational break-out sessions for participating students will follow. The program will conclude with a drawing for door prizes. Students from all of the Eau Claire TRIO projects will participate in the activities held in and around Davies Theatre.

The first TRIO programs were established in the 1960s to expand opportunities for students who might otherwise be denied access to a college education. Over 870,000 students are now served each year by 2,600 TRIO projects across the nation.

All members of the community are invited to the National TRIO day activities. For more information, contact Dr. Bruce Ouderkirk, director of Student Support Services, at (715) 836-4542 or ouderkbj@uwec.edu.
