SUBJECT: Student Support for Faculty Raises
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Interim Chancellor Vicki Lord Larson has declined to consider implementing a Student Senate initiative that would have provided additional financial support to faculty and instructional academic staff.
Student Senate Bill 49-R-42 would have created a supplemental tuition program to provide a modest salary increase for those who teach at UW-Eau Claire.
While deciding against considering the program, Larson praised Student Senate President Aaron Olson and students for their strong support of the central mission of teaching.
"You and your team of Student Senators are commended for the thoughtfulness, care and concern that are evidence in the development of this proposal. Your collective insights regarding the challenges of recruiting and retaining faculty and staff are remarkable," Larson wrote in a letter to Olson informing him of her decision.
In her letter, Larson also said providing competitive wages to faculty and staff should not be the responsibility of students. "The issue of salary for our faculty and staff truly rests with the UW System Board of Regents, as well as with the legislative and executive branches of our state government," Larson wrote.
