EAU CLAIRE — Dr. L. Elaine Wendt, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been elected to serve on the Wisconsin Center for Nursing board of directors. Her term begins in January 2006.

"The Wisconsin Center for Nursing was incorporated on Sept. 13, culminating a four-year vision to help direct strategies for nursing in Wisconsin," Wendt said. "The mission of the center is to form and sustain a partnership among academe, healthcare organizations, state government, nursing organization and nurses to assure an adequate well-prepared nursing workforce to meet the health care needs of the citizens of Wisconsin."

The Wisconsin Center for Nursing will advance nursing excellence by supporting programs in nursing workforce planning, development, education and promotion of evidence-based practice, Wendt said. The center also will serve as a statewide data clearinghouse for information relating to nursing practice and nursing workforce supply and demand, and it will provide oversight for a statewide strategic plan to advance nursing and health care delivery, Wendt said.

The center also will offer policy recommendations regarding nursing and nursing education, but it will not engage in political activity or attempt to influence legislation, Wendt said.

Wendt will serve on the center's board of directors as the representative from the Wisconsin Association Collegiate School of Nursing, an organization of deans and chairs of all baccalaureate and higher degree nursing programs in Wisconsin. She is currently the president of the WACSN.

Wendt also serves on the Governor's Select Task Force on Healthcare Workforce Development.
