UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Alumni Relations, Communications Professionals Win 11 Awards

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumni relations and communications staff members received 11 awards at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District V conference, held Dec. 11-13 in Chicago. The 11 awards were the most won by any college or university, public or private, in Wisconsin.

CASE, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the professional organization for advancement professionals at all levels who work in alumni relations, communications and development. CASE District V includes member institutions in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

"These awards represent the best work done by alumni and communications professionals at many outstanding institutions in six states," said UW-Eau Claire Foundation President Carole Halberg, who supervises staff in the Foundation, alumni and communications. "Winning so many awards in a variety of categories is a testament to the talent and dedication of our advancement team."

Gold Award winners were:

  • Most Improved Alumni/Institution Magazine category: Ann Hoffman, senior editor in the News Bureau; Sheila Pederson, senior artist in the Publications office; and Rick Mickelson, photographer and graphics coordinator in Learning and Technology Services, for The View, UW-Eau Claire's alumni publication.
  • The Teresa Du Bois Exline Award for Best Practices in Communications and Marketing category: Elizabeth Wolf Green, editor in the News Bureau, and Jodi Baglien, a communications specialist in the Publications office, for a parking awareness campaign.
  • Excellence in Design, Miscellaneous Publications/Specialty Pieces: Green, Mickelson and Ansel Brooks, an artist in the Publications office, for the "Just Where Do You Think You're Going?" recruitment campaign.
  • Best New Alumni Program category: Alumni Director John Bachmeier for the "Let's Do Lunch" program.
  • Best Website, Individual Page or Section category: College of Business Web site created by Gretchen Hutterli, assistant dean/external affairs in the College of Business; Kou Thao, a graphic designer in the College of Business; student Christopher Newgard; and alumni Beth Larson and Donald Ross.
  • Best Individual Photo: Structured category: Mickelson, Pederson and Hoffman.
  • Best Photo Series: Structured category: Mickelson, Baglien, Brooks, Pederson and Deb Blanchard, LTS office assistant.

Silver Award winners were:

  • Excellence in News Writing category: Judy Berthiaume, director of the News Bureau.

Bronze Award winners were:

  • Excellence in News Writing category: Berthiaume.
  • Excellence in Feature Writing, Individual: Janice Wisner, a consultant in the News Bureau.
  • Best Institutional Website category: UW-Eau Claire Web site, created by Berthiaume; Green; Lillian Hillis, university Web coordinator; Hoffman; Brian Hogan, Web support; Mari Jo Janke, director of the Publications office; Mindy Merryfield, artist in the Publications office; Mickelson; Juliana Poquette, communications specialist in the News Bureau; Mike Rindo, executive director of University Communications; and Nancy Wesenberg, communications specialist in the News Bureau.
