EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has entered into a partnership with Jeonju National University for Education, a teacher training school located in the southwestern region of South Korea.
Jeonju will send 20-25 elementary education students to UW-Eau Claire's summer program for teaching English as a second language, according to the terms of the agreement to be signed Dec. 5 by UW-Eau Claire Interim Chancellor Vicki Lord Larson and Dr. Yong Suk Lee, JNUE president.
Korea is putting a lot of energy into education and English studies, said Karl Markgraf, director of the UW-Eau Claire Center for International Education.
"English education starts in third grade in Korea, so it's important for these future elementary education teachers to develop their knowledge of English and ESL methodology," he said.
Jeonju University is a sister school to Daegu National University of Education, which has had a similar partnership agreement with UW-Eau Claire since 1999.
"These schools have the same kind of roots as UW-Eau Claire, in that they are regional schools and focus on teacher training," said Markgraf, who visited both universities in early November.
