Media Memo: Job Prospects for May Graduates

TO: News/Assignment Editors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume, director, UW-Eau Claire News Bureau

DATE: April 26, 2005

SUBJECT: Job Prospects for May Graduates

UW-Eau Claire students preparing to enter the working world after they graduate next month have good reason to be hopeful, according to a new report published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. The Spring 2005 issue of Salary Survey shows that average salary offers to new college graduates are climbing at a steady pace.

Many of the fields that the study notes as having average salary increases are areas that UW-Eau Claire offers majors in, such as computer science, accounting, economics/finance, business administration and marketing. The study also showed that salaries in the areas of the liberal arts are increasing as well.

The business disciplines fared especially well. Accounting graduates posted a 3.9 percent increase to their average starting salary offer since last Spring, raising it to $43,809. Graduates with business administration/management degrees saw their average jump 3.2 percent, to $39,448. Offers to economics/finance graduates increased 5.1 percent, bringing their average starting salaries to $42,802. Marketing graduates posted an increase of 6 percent, bringing their average offer up to $37,832, and computer science graduates saw a 2.6 percent increase, raising it to $51,292.

The Salary Survey is a quarterly report of starting salary offers to new college graduates in 70 disciplines at the bachelor's degree level. The survey compiles data from college and university career services offices nationwide.

NACE research also found that employers expect to hire more college graduates this spring.

Jeanne Skoug, director of Career Services at UW-Eau Claire, is available to talk about the current hiring climate for UW-Eau Claire students. You can reach her at (715) 836-5358 or skougjm@uwec.edu.
