Three UW-Eau Claire Nursing Students Receive National or State Scholarships

RELEASED: April 27, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Three nursing students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire were recently awarded scholarships that involved competition at the national or state level.

Senior Jamie Lee Lahti, Cedarburg, received a Campaign for Nursing's Future Scholarship funded by the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. The goal of the award is to address the nationwide nursing shortage and support those involved in the profession. The company has stated it "hopes to bring more people into nursing, develop more nurse educators, and retain the talent already in the profession."

Lahti said she is extremely grateful and honored to receive the award, which required her to provide an extensive amount of information, including a 200-word essay about her goals as a nurse.

"I believe this scholarship demonstrates not only my personal achievements, but also the excellence found in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences," Lahti said.

Seniors Kelly Gruber, Mondovi, and Pamela Baseman, Ladysmith, were among 18 students from around the state who received Wisconsin League for Nursing Scholarships funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin. This program, also established to help address the nursing shortage, required students who have completed at least half of the credits necessary for graduation to write about their scholastic ability, professional or community activities, goals for nursing and financial need.

"I am very glad to have received this," said Gruber, noting that she had applied for 24 scholarships this year. "It is so helpful that companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield provide scholarships such as these to help defray the cost of continually rising tuition."

Baseman, who is graduating in May, said she has already signed on to work in Sacred Heart Hospital's emergency room. She also recently was named one of UW-Eau Claire's outstanding seniors at the UW-Eau Claire Honors Week Banquet.
